112 | Spotting Before Period? It’s NOT Normal—Here’s Why

Hey sister! Let’s chat about something that’s often overlooked but so important: spotting before your period. If you’ve ever thought, “It’s just old blood; it’s fine,” I’m here to tell you—it’s not something to ignore. Let’s dive into what spotting really means, why it happens, and how you can take steps to support your body.

When I first started learning about my cycle, I thought spotting was just part of the deal. Maybe it was my body getting ready for my period or cleaning things out. But here’s the truth: spotting before your period is often a sign of low progesterone. Progesterone is the “sustainer” hormone that holds up your uterine lining and keeps everything in balance. When levels are low, the lining starts breaking down early, which leads to spotting.

But it’s not just about spotting. Low progesterone can cause a host of other symptoms—mood swings, low energy, headaches, breast tenderness, and even a lower libido. If you’ve noticed these alongside spotting, it’s your body’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s off here.”

Low progesterone often ties back to ovulation. If your ovulation isn’t strong or consistent, your body may not produce enough progesterone to keep things stable. For example, if the corpus luteum (the leftover follicle after ovulation) isn’t healthy, it won’t produce sufficient progesterone. Sometimes, ovulation doesn’t happen at all, or it’s incomplete—a condition called a luteinized unruptured follicle (LUF). And while your body might try to compensate, it’s not the same as a fully healthy ovulation.

The first step to understanding what’s happening in your body is tracking your cycle consistently. Charting through a certified fertility awareness method (like FEMM, which I teach) helps you recognize patterns and identify what’s normal for you. For instance, knowing your luteal phase length can provide valuable clues. If it’s typically 13 days but now it’s shorter or includes spotting, that’s a red flag.

Here’s another key insight: spotting is not the start of your period. Your cycle officially begins with your first day of light flow, not those early spots. This distinction matters because it helps you understand your luteal phase and assess whether your hormones are in balance. If you are struggling to identify whether or not you are having luteal phase issues, like spotting, consider getting support. I would love to help you on your journey! Check out Fertility Framework for more information.

Navigating hormonal imbalances and spotting can feel overwhelming, but let’s turn to Deuteronomy 31:8 for encouragement:

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

When you’re faced with uncertainty—whether it’s about your cycle, fertility, or anything else—know that God goes before you. He’s with you in every step, even in the frustration of spotting or the waiting for answers. Put this verse on your bathroom mirror or wherever you’ll see it often. It’s a reminder that God is with you, even in the details of your cycle.

If spotting is part of your story, it’s time to take action. Here are a few steps you can start with:

Learn to Chart Your Cycle: Get educated on tracking your biomarkers and understanding your luteal phase. Learn exactly how to do this through a verified method like FEMM by taking the Fertility Framework course and getting support from me directly.

Support Your Progesterone Levels Naturally: Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. This might include dietary tweaks, stress management, or supplements, depending on your situation. Again, you can learn all about this and more in my course Fertility Framework.

As frustrating as spotting can be, it’s a reminder of the intricate and awe-inspiring way God created us. Even in a broken world, His design shines through. Our cycles reflect His care, and every symptom is an opportunity to lean into that design, steward our health, and glorify Him.

If you’re ready to take the next step in understanding your body, come join me in Fertility Framework. You’ll learn not just about spotting but about the broader picture of hormonal health and how to support it naturally.
