I still remember sitting in a college class, hearing Psalm 46:10 in full for the first time. Not just the comforting part about being still, but the second part too: “I will be exalted among the nations.” It wasn’t just about peace. It was about purpose.
If you’re here today reading this, it might be because you’re struggling with something that feels anything but peaceful. Perhaps its irregular cycles, miscarriage, or a hunch that low progesterone is part of your fertility story. Maybe you’re charting and doing all the things, and you’re still left wondering: “Why isn’t this working?” On this episode of the podcast, I walk with you through the physiology of progesterone, five natural ways to support it, and a biblical invitation to take your eyes off the pregnancy test for a moment and fix them firmly on the God who rules over nations, hormones, and wombs. Let’s go there together.
Progesterone literally means pro-gestation. It’s the hormone that prepares your body to support and sustain life. After you ovulate, the follicle that released your egg turns into something called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. This hormone thickens and nourishes your uterine lining, keeps your immune system calm so your body doesn’t reject a fertilized embryo, and sustains early pregnancy.
But here’s the coolest part: if fertilization happens, the baby (yes, even when it’s just a teeny group of cells!) starts producing HCG – the hormone that tells the corpus luteum, “Hey! I’m here! Keep making progesterone, please!” And if it doesn’t get that message? Progesterone drops, and your period begins.
Every single cycle, your body is wired to prepare for life. That’s God’s design. Even if conception doesn’t happen that month, your hormones are still beautifully patterned after fruitfulness. So if progesterone is low, or your luteal phase is too short, or you’re waking up exhausted … it’s worth paying attention. The good news is that there are things you can do naturally to support your progesterone. Inside Fertility Framework, I teach women about what happens in their bodies each month and how to interpret the signs they may not even know they are being given. God designed your reproductive system with care, complexity, and intention. And He invites you to pray not just generally, but specifically. Here’s an example of what that might sound like:
“Lord, please let my estrogen rise swiftly and fully so that a healthy follicle can develop and rupture. Let ovulation happen in its right time. I pray for the release of the egg and for safe travel through my fallopian tube. If it is your will, knit a baby together in my womb, and may that embryo implant in just the right spot. Let the HCG signal my body to continue producing progesterone, and let my hormone levels be strong enough to sustain life.”
That’s not too specific. That’s stewardship and faith working together. Bring your biology before the Lord. He knows it better than you do anyway. I love getting to help women discover what God is saying to them in their fertility journey. Neither God nor Scripture are not silent on these important matters. Progesterone is known as the “relaxing” hormone for a reason. If your levels are healthy, you’ll often sleep better during the second half of your cycle. But if you’re struggling with sleep, having racing thoughts at night, early morning waking, or trouble falling asleep, that could be a sign your progesterone is low. (If you are curious about your own personal hormone levels, take my free hormone quiz!)
Here are a few ideas of what can help your progesterone levels:
Your body needs rest to make hormones. This is your permission slip to go to bed early.
Hormones are made from cholesterol, which means that fat is not the enemy. It’s actually your ally. Some healthy fats include:
And here’s a quick tip: when eating out, ask what oil they use. Most restaurants default to inflammatory oils high in omega-6s, which can throw off your hormone balance. Even small swaps make a big difference over time.
Kale, arugula, Swiss chard, collards, spinach – these leafy greens are rich in DIM (diindolylmethane), a compound that helps your body filter out excess or fake estrogens (xenoestrogens). That’s important because estrogen and progesterone need to be in balance. If estrogen is too high in proportion, it can suppress progesterone and throw off your whole cycle. Aim for 1–2 servings a day, especially during your luteal phase. Dark leafy greens are also full of calcium, magnesium, and B vitamins. These are nutrients your body needs to keep hormones humming.
Here’s a little-known fact: Vitamin C and citrus can help lower cortisol, your body’s main stress hormone. Cortisol and progesterone compete for the same building blocks. When stress is high, your body will prioritize survival (cortisol) over reproduction (progesterone). Start your day with warm lemon water. Snack on an orange or grapefruit during your luteal phase. Try adding lime to your water or meals. These small changes help remind your body: “It’s safe. You can shift from surviving to thriving.” To learn more about how diet and lifestyle can help support your fertility, come join me inside Fertility Framework.
Psalm 46:10 is often quoted for comfort, but don’t miss its context. It’s not just about peace, but praise. It’s a reminder that God is at work on a global scale. This part is tender, sister, but I want you to hear it. You were made for more than motherhood. Yes, children are a gift. Yes, desiring a baby is beautiful and godly. Yes, I will keep praying with you for that miracle. But your primary purpose is not pregnancy – it’s to glorify God. And this verse reminds us that He will be exalted, not just in your womb, but in your waiting, your surrender, your daily obedience. So while you’re taking care of your body, don’t forget to also take care of your soul. Your days are not wasted while you wait. They’re an offering.
