Hey sweet sister! I had no idea what a midwife was until I was already neck-deep in loss, healing, and the long journey of waiting on God for a healthy pregnancy. I grew up like most women do—thinking, Well, when I get pregnant, I’ll just go to my OB, right? That’s what everyone does. That’s what I did.
Until the Lord nudged me otherwise.
At 31 weeks pregnant with my rainbow baby, I finally started to ask: Is there another way? And what I found changed everything.
“The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do.” — Exodus 1:17a
Let’s clear something up right away: Both OBs and midwives are medically responsible for you and your baby. Both models include regular checkups. But the how behind those checkups? Night and day difference.
OB care tends to be clinical, short, and focused on finding problems. It’s usually 10–15 minute visits, limited conversation, and very little nutrition or lifestyle guidance. It’s great for emergencies or high-risk care, but it often lacks that personal, preventative touch.
Midwifery care, on the other hand, is holistic, relational, and centered on supporting your body to do what God designed it to do. (Learn more about this wonderful design for women’s bodies in my program Fertility Framework). My midwife spent an hour with me at every visit. She prayed with me. She taught me about nutrition, baby positioning, movement, herbal support—you name it.
I had no idea that kind of care even existed.
Yes! In fact, I often refer my clients (especially those with low progesterone) to Midwife RX, a telehealth option with certified nurse midwives who can run labs, prescribe what’s needed, and truly support you before pregnancy even begins.
Midwives aren’t just for birth. They can be a part of your preconception and hormone health journey, too.
Make sure to tune in to our latest episode of For the Love of Hormones – What is a Midwife? for further details.
There are two main kinds:
If you’re TTC, I’d recommend finding a CNM for early support, then choosing a CPM or other midwife later for birth if that’s the route you’re feeling led to take.
If you are dealing with hormone concerns or low progesterone and need support for what’s next, I would love to chat with you! I offer a free 10-minute consult.
Friend, you don’t need to have both an OB and a midwife. You need to prayerfully choose the right model of care for you.
You have options. You have a voice. And God will guide you.
Start by asking the Lord, What do You have for me in this?
“The midwives feared God…” (Exodus 1:17). Even back then, midwives weren’t just professionals—they were protectors. They were brave. They stood for life. And I believe that same heart is still alive today in the right midwives who honor God with their care.
