159 | Progesterone and Miscarriage: Seeing the Full Story

If you’ve ever wondered whether low progesterone could be part of your fertility story, or maybe you’ve walked through miscarriage and can’t shake the question, Was something wrong with my hormones?”, girl, you are not alone.

This is one of the most common conversations I have with women inside my course, Fertility Framework. And it’s one I feel deeply passionate about, because understanding progesterone can be the difference between guessing and finally knowing what your body is trying to say.

A friend told me recently that her doctor ran hormone labs on cycle day 10, and said everything looked “fine.” My heart sank a little. Because here’s the truth: testing your hormones at the wrong time is like standing in front of one tree and thinking you understand the whole forest. You might get a glimpse, but you won’t see the full story.

On this episode of the podcast, I discuss how hormones ebb and flow throughout your cycle. They’re beautifully timed, orchestrated by God to work together. Testing them randomly, without context, is like catching a single note in a symphony and assuming you know the whole song. When doctors test progesterone too early or too late, the results can look “normal,” but that doesn’t mean they’re optimal. And when you’ve walked through loss, or you’re trying to prevent another one, that distinction matters so much.

Progesterone literally means “pro-gestation” – for life. It’s the hormone that supports implantation, nurtures the uterine lining, and helps your body sustain a pregnancy. Without enough of it, the lining can thin or shed too early, leading to early loss. In my FEMM training (Fertility Education and Medical Management), we were taught that low progesterone is one of the leading causes of miscarriage. Yet so many women aren’t tested at the right time, or at all. Some are told to “try again” after multiple losses before anyone even checks their levels. And that’s not okay.

Progesterone should be tested after ovulation, around 7 to 10 days later, because that’s when it shines. It’s produced by the corpus luteum, the little structure formed when your body releases an egg. If there’s no ovulation, there’s no progesterone, and that’s critical information for both fertility and early pregnancy. Inside Fertility Framework, I detail this beautiful system and walk you through what your body is actually doing and what it truly needs to successfully cycle and/or carry life.

When we only rely on a one-day blood test, we’re looking at one tree. But your cycle is a forest, full of signs and signals of what’s happening inside your body. Learning to chart your cycle: your cervical mucus, your basal body temperature, and your cycle phases, gives you the full picture. You start to see why certain things might be happening: long follicular phases, short luteal phases, delayed ovulation, or patterns that point to hormonal imbalance.

Tools like Inito (use code SETFREE15 for 15% off) can be a great place to start. It’s a simple at-home device that tests all four major ovulatory hormones through urine, no needles required. I love using it with my clients, because it helps us see what’s happening throughout the cycle, not just on one day. But even using Inito doesn’t provide us with the full picture. It’s a tool, not a diagnosis. The real work comes from learning to interpret what your body is telling you and pairing that information with prayer, education, and lifestyle support.

If you want to talk with someone about all of this, I offer free 10-minute consults. I would love to hear your story and help guide you into your next steps.

Low progesterone is rarely the root cause. It’s a branch growing from something deeper. You can absolutely supplement with bioidentical progesterone when it’s needed, and it can be incredibly helpful, but if we stop there, we miss the bigger story.

Why is it low in the first place?

Sometimes it’s chronic stress – high cortisol levels can “steal” from progesterone production. Sometimes it’s inflammation, under-eating, or sleep deprivation. Sometimes it’s unresolved trauma or grief, living quietly in the body but still affecting hormone balance. Your hormones are not isolated. They respond to your environment, your emotions, your habits, and your pace of life. Take my free hormone quiz to see if your hormones need extra support in this season. If you’re constantly exhausted, anxious, or feeling like you can’t slow down, it’s not just “life.” It’s your body waving a flag, asking for rest and nourishment.

I’ve seen women try everything – progesterone creams, supplements, strict diets, and still struggle because they never addressed the deeper roots. The truth is, healing isn’t just physical. It’s spiritual and emotional, too. Sometimes God invites us to pause, to let Him speak into the parts of our lives we’ve been too busy to notice. The pace we keep, the pressure we carry, the fears we don’t voice. He cares about all of it. And He designed our hormones with purpose, not to frustrate us, but to teach us what’s happening within us.

This is part of what I love so much about Fertility Framework. We take the time to address the spiritual issues within us, not just the physical ones. We dive into Scripture where we see women who have a choice to either control, or surrender their fertility journeys to God. We each have the same choice to make.
