I’ll be honest… when I first started connecting the dots between mold and fertility, I felt a mix of relief and grief. Relief because maybe there was an answer. Grief because, how did we miss this?
If you’re walking through infertility or recovering from miscarriage, you’ve probably become an expert in your own body. You’ve eliminated gluten, ordered the supplements, tracked your cycle, and cried in the car after yet another appointment that led nowhere. You are not crazy. And you are definitely not alone.
But what if there’s a root cause that most doctors aren’t even looking for?
That’s exactly what I explored in a recent podcast episode with Aubree Felderhoff, founder of Mold Free Mom and board-certified holistic health practitioner.
Aubree was a national champion collegiate gymnast. She owned a bootcamp company. She was the picture of health. Then she moved into her brand-new dream home, had her second son, and within months everything fell apart.
Over the next seven years, she lost most of her hair, her eyebrows, a significant portion of her vision and hearing. She could no longer drive. Walking required assistance. Her heart became enlarged. She experienced seizure-like episodes. She collected diagnoses across nearly every system of her body, including endometriosis, and nothing made sense.
It took a divine encounter involving her husband mentioning her symptoms to a brand-new coworker, who immediately said, “She sounds just like my sister-in-law. Call her.” Aubred finally discovered that mold was behind everything.
That moment? That was God.
The World Health Organization has called mold “the great masquerader of the 21st century.” It can present as thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, depression, hair loss, gut issues, cognitive decline, and yes — infertility and endometriosis.
One of the most eye-opening things Aubree shared is that every person in the same home can experience completely different symptoms. Her husband had joint pain and swelling. One son had attention and behavioral issues. Another had extreme food sensitivities. Another had vision problems and night terrors. And Aubree? She had neurological symptoms so severe she was tested for early-onset dementia in her early thirties.
Sound like anything you’ve seen in your own home?
Women and children tend to be more severely affected partly due to hormones, partly because we often spend more time in the home where the exposure is occurring.
This part of our conversation genuinely changed the way I think about healing.
Aubree explained that when the body is overwhelmed by mold toxins over a long period of time (we breathe 22,000 breaths a day, remember) it eventually pulls those toxins deeper into protective layers of organs and fat to shield itself. This is called colonization. And this is why so many people take binders, do detox protocols, and still don’t get better. Binders work through the stomach and bloodstream. They can’t reach toxins that have been stored deep in the gut, lungs, or nasal cavity.
She was being treated for active exposure when she actually needed help with colonization. That’s five years of getting it wrong — from lack of the right roadmap.
First: don’t panic. I know that feels impossible when you’re reading this and your mind is already scanning every corner of your house. But Aubree says the first step is simple.
She offers a free 87-question mold symptom assessment on her website here that will walk you through your symptoms, your timeline, and your living environment — and give you personalized next steps based on where you land. If your score puts you in the high-likelihood range, she’ll likely recommend a blood serum test that measures your actual toxin load and tells you whether you’re in an active exposure right now or dealing with long-term colonization.
That distinction changes everything about how you heal.
As Aubree reflected on the 12 years she lost — the years with her boys she can never get back — she said something that stayed with me:
“Time is the only commodity we can never get back. I grieved for a while. But my goal now is to help prevent that in other families.”
That’s redemption. That’s what God does with our hardest chapters.
If you’ve been chasing answers and coming up empty, I want you to consider whether mold might be a missing piece of your puzzle. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t. But you deserve to know. You deserve a clear path forward.
