189 | What Your Doctor Didn’t Tell You: 3 Ways to Prevent Miscarriage

If you’ve ever sat in your doctor’s office after a miscarriage — maybe your first, maybe your third — and left feeling like the answers just weren’t there, I want you to know: I’ve been in that exact chair.

After my second miscarriage, I asked my doctor: Is there anything I can do? Her answer was honest, I think. But it was not enough. “Well, not really,” she said. “We could do some testing, but there’s really not a way to find out why.”

At the time, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I couldn’t explain what ovulation was. I didn’t know the word “advocacy” in the context of my own healthcare. So I took her answer as truth.

It wasn’t.

Praise the Lord that a really good friend of mine, when I shared what the doctor told me, looked at me and said, “Girl, you can get better answers than that.” And that challenged me to go looking. And what I found changed everything.

Today, I want to share three things that 97% of doctors are not going to walk you through after a miscarriage. Before we get into those, though, I want to bring us to a story that I believe was written for women like us.

In Mark 5:24–34, Jesus is on his way to heal Jairus’ daughter when a woman pushes through the crowd to reach him. Scripture says she had suffered for twelve years. She had been to many doctors — the best ones, presumably — and spent everything she had. And still, she only grew worse. And she never got better.

Until she heard about Jesus and believed.

She didn’t ask for a formal introduction. She didn’t wait for the right moment. She just thought: If I can touch even his cloak, I will be healed. And she was right. The moment her fingers brushed his garment, she was freed.

Jesus turns and asks, “Who touched my clothes?” And she falls at his feet — trembling, but honest — and tells him the whole truth.

This was like 2000 years ago, and the healthcare system was very different. And yet, I think, the principle completely still applies. If I can just touch him, I know he can heal me – and that is a great faith that we are invited to embrace for our own lives, our own journeys.

If we aren’t seeking Jesus in the crowd, and trying to touch him, in knowing that if we could, we can be healed – nothing else matters. It doesn’t matter who it is, no one can heal us like Christ can.

He is still in the crowd. And we are still invited to reach for him.

When we are thinking of praying for healing, we pray with bold faith that he can heal us on the spot. And if he chooses not to, “I will still bless your name, Lord, whether you chose to heal me right now or not. Take this from me if you can Lord, but let thy will be done.” That is the prayer we want to pray with Christ.

1. Learn How to Chart Your Fertility Cycle

I know “charting” can sound clinical and complicated, but stay with me here — because this one habit is the single most powerful thing you can do to understand what’s actually going on inside your body.

I’m a certified FEMM (Fertility Education and Medical Management) instructor, and I teach this inside my Fertility Framework program. When you learn how to chart using an evidence-based fertility awareness method, you stop guessing and start observing real data: how heavy your period actually is, what your body’s secretions indicate about your estrogen levels, whether you’re ovulating — and ovulating well — and whether your luteal phase shows strong progesterone production.

This isn’t the rhythm method. This is your body’s vital sign, captured daily in less than a minute.

After a loss, I always encourage women to wait two to three cycles before trying to conceive again — charting the whole time. Those charts tell us so much about what your body is doing and what support it might need. Some doctors are now partnering with fertility awareness methods as part of a restorative care plan. If yours doesn’t know what a fertility awareness chart is — or thinks it’s just the rhythm method — that’s your sign to seek out someone who is up to date in education.

2. Look Deeper: Root Cause Work

This is the piece most women never hear about, and it matters enormously.

After a miscarriage, most practitioners will focus on the loss itself. But miscarriage rarely happens in a vacuum. Often there’s something deeper going on — a root issue that’s quietly destabilizing your hormones and your body’s ability to sustain a pregnancy.

Root causes I look for include thyroid dysfunction, gut imbalances, liver health, chronic inflammation, and adrenal fatigue. All of these systems feed into your endocrine system. When one is off, your hormones don’t do what they’re designed to do — and that can absolutely contribute to pregnancy loss.

I know this personally. After my three losses, I discovered I was dealing with both a thyroid issue and adrenal dysfunction. Until I addressed those things, my cycle charts never looked quite right. Once I did the root cause work, my charts reflected a body that was actually ready, and I was able to conceive again. And I had my sweet baby girl and carried her to term.

Your body is telling you something after a loss. Root cause work helps you actually listen.

3. Support Your Hormones Before You Get Pregnant Again

This is the one that honestly makes me the most passionate — and the most frustrated.

Here’s what I hear from so many women: their doctor’s plan is to wait until they’re pregnant again, and then start progesterone support if levels look low. And I just have to say, lovingly — that is too late.

Here’s why: your uterine lining is actively nourishing a potential pregnancy before you even know you’re pregnant. After ovulation, your body secretes nutrients from your uterine lining into your womb. That is God’s design — the most incredible provision — but it only works if your womb is healthy enough to do it.

If your uterine lining is thin, inflamed, or undernourished because of underlying hormonal issues, adding progesterone at six to eight weeks gestation isn’t going to undo that damage. The environment for your baby to implant and grow starts with womb health long before a positive test.

The goal is to heal before you conceive — to give your body the support it needs so that when a pregnancy does arrive, it’s coming home to a womb that’s been waiting, prepared, and restored.

These three pillars — charting, root cause work, and proactive hormone and womb health support — are the foundation of everything I do inside my Fertility Framework program. They’re also what I walked through personally after my own three losses.

I always say: half the time, natural lifestyle changes and cycle charting will be enough to get your body into a healthy, beautiful place to try again. Half the time, we do benefit from bringing in a restorative-minded practitioner alongside us. Either way, you’re not navigating this in the dark anymore.

I don’t replace your doctor. But I do believe every woman deserves more information than “not really” — and a care team that’s actually working to understand why.

You have done nothing wrong. You are not alone. And there is a path forward.
