192 | How Husbands Can Support Their Wives Through Miscarriage: A Husband’s Perspective

I’ve told my miscarriage story so many times I’m blue in the face about it. But there’s a whole side of that story I’ve almost never shared, and that’s my husband Adam’s side of it.

We lost our daughter Hannah at 15 weeks, past the 12-week mark everyone tells you is “safe.” Our guard was down. We were excited to walk into a 4D ultrasound and see her in a new way. Instead, we sat in a quiet room while a technician struggled to find words, and then drove home in near silence, each of us in a completely different place. I was already sensing the truth. Adam was holding onto hope that it was a mistake. When we reached the doctor’s office, the miscarriage was confirmed.

What I didn’t fully understand until much later was how differently Adam experienced everything that followed, and how much wisdom is packed into that difference for every couple walking through loss.

Adam has described himself as a “mission to mission” kind of guy, someone who keeps one thing at the front of his mind at a time. Because he couldn’t fully picture how to plan for a baby he hadn’t met yet, that pregnancy stayed mentally shelved behind the fires of daily life: work, our other kids, whatever was in front of him. He always assumed he’d have time later to make it his focus.

Then Hannah passed, and that shelf got emptied all at once, before he’d ever had the chance to open it on his own terms.

I used to wonder if his slower response meant he cared less. I know now it meant nothing of the kind. He was protecting his ability to be steady for me in the moment I needed steadiness most.

In the hospital, Adam stayed composed for hours, present, gentle, able to give of himself because he’d kept his own grief carefully tucked away. Then, that night as I delivered Hannah, that composure broke. All the thoughts he’d shelved came flooding back at once, and we ended up simply holding each other and grieving out loud together.

Looking back, I see that moment as one of the most sacrificial things he’s ever done for me. He set his own processing aside so he could be fully present for mine, and only let himself fall apart once I had what I needed from him. That’s not the absence of grief. That’s love that chooses timing on purpose.

If you asked me what made Adam’s support real, it wasn’t grand gestures. It was presence. It was that he never went cold, never pulled away, never let the loss put distance between us. We clung to each other instead of drifting apart, and that, more than anything, carried us.

He’ll tell you himself: he didn’t have it all figured out. He was still discovering, weeks and months later, thoughts he hadn’t finished thinking, hopes for what color to paint a room, what it might have been like to raise a girl alongside our boys. He processed those slowly, often on his own, even while trying to be present for me. And that’s exactly the encouragement he’d give another dad: you don’t need to have it all sorted out to lend your presence, your ear, and your arms to your wife.

Adam talked about something from his time in jail ministry that has stuck with me ever since: the difference between how the world pictures meditation and how scripture does. The world often imagines emptying the mind. Scripture invites us to deliberately, repeatedly fill our minds with what is true and good, the way a cow chews its cud again and again throughout the day.

That’s what scripture memory became for him in that season, an unexpected gift the Lord grew in a man who used to find it like pulling teeth. And it’s what Ecclesiastes 3 became for both of us: a reminder that there is a season for everything, and this, this slow, aching, sacred season of grief, deserved its own time rather than being buried under a packed schedule.

If you’re a husband walking through loss right now, Adam’s word to you is simple: don’t feel like you have to stuff this down and fill your days so you never have to open that box. Let the Lord use this time. Find another dad who’s been here, the way a friend once took Adam out for pizza and just let him talk. And know that showing up, even without perfect words, is enough.

And if you’re the wife wondering whether your husband’s slower pace means he doesn’t feel it the way you do, I’d gently offer this: it might just mean he’s carrying it differently, not less.
