185 | Should I Do IUI or IVF to Get Pregnant? 4 Questions to Help You Decide

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been on this road longer than you ever imagined. Maybe a fertility clinic has already handed you a plan — IUI, IVF, another round — with a price tag and a percentage, and you walked out of that office feeling more confused and pressured than when you walked in.

Maybe you’re carrying the weight of loss. Maybe everyone around you, doctors, well-meaning family members, even your own anxious heart, is telling you to just do something.

Friend, I see you.

In this podcast episode I encourage you to getting informed before you make one of the most significant decisions of your fertility journey.

Recently, I had a client come to me in tears after meeting with a fertility specialist. In that appointment, the doctor never asked about her cycle length. Never asked about her period, her ovulation patterns, her hormone health. Not a single question about what her body was actually doing.

Instead, within minutes, she was handed two options: IUI (again, even though it hadn’t worked before) or IVF — $30,000 and a 50% chance.

That is not fertility care. That is fertility pressure. And it happens more often than it should.

Your body is telling a story. Before you take any next step, you deserve to understand what that story is.

Here’s an analogy I love to share: learning to understand your body is like learning a new language.

If you wanted to become truly fluent in French or Mandarin, you wouldn’t get there by scrolling Facebook groups or asking ChatGPT a few questions. You’d need formal education, immersion, and time. That’s what real fluency takes.

Your hormones, your cycle, your cervical mucus, and your basal body temperature are all a language your body speaks every single day. However, just knowing a few vocabulary words isn’t enough to understand what it’s saying.

The science behind fertility awareness methods was developed in the 1950s and 60s by men who feared God and wanted to understand His design in the female body. That same science — tracking biomarkers like luteinizing hormone, basal body temperature, and cervical mucus — is what helps us read your body’s language with real understanding.

You deserve that education before you make any major intervention decision.

1. Do You Understand What Your Body Is Currently Doing?

Can you tell me what’s happening in your follicular phase? Your luteal phase? Do you know if your ovulation is healthy? Is your cycle giving you any signals — heavier periods, unusual cramping, excessive cervical mucus days — that point to something worth addressing first? If the answer is “I’m not sure,” that’s not a reason to feel ashamed! It’s a reason to get educated first. Because walking into a fertility intervention without understanding your own baseline is like signing a contract written in a language you’ve never learned.

2. Are You Addressing Root Causes?

Once you can observe your cycle clearly, the next question is why things look the way they do. Heavy periods… why? Unusually long or short cycles… why? Abnormal mucus patterns… why?

There are real, addressable root causes that impact fertility: thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, underlying conditions like endometriosis, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, and more. Before pursuing an intervention, it is so worth asking: have I looked at what might actually be causing this?

(More on thyroid specifically in a moment — it’s a big one.)

3. Do You Feel Peace or Pressure About This Decision?

This one is spiritual, and it matters deeply.

When you imagine moving forward with IUI or IVF, does a quiet peace settle over you or do you feel a knot of anxiety, a sense of “I have to do this because there’s no other option”? Are you being rushed by a doctor, a timeline, the fear of missing your window? Or are you operating from a place of stillness and surrender?

The Lord is not a God of pressure. He is a God of peace. And if you don’t have that peace yet, it may be a signal to pause and seek His face before you proceed.

4. Have You Brought This Decision Fully Before the Lord?

This journey is not just medical. It is deeply spiritual, deeply emotional, and deeply personal. The God who enabled Sarah to conceive at 90 years old is the same God who sees you, knows your body, knows your story, and is completely unbound by timelines and statistics.

Bring it to Him. With your husband. In the quiet. And wait for His guidance. There is always time in the economy of God.

If you are considering IUI or IVF and you have not had a full thyroid panel done, please make this a priority before moving forward. Thyroid dysfunction is one of the most overlooked root causes of infertility and miscarriage — and a standard TSH test alone will not tell you the whole picture.I’ve created a free downloadable guide that walks you through exactly what a full thyroid panel includes, what to ask your provider, and what optimal (not just “normal”) lab ranges look like.
